CUBRC Signs $4.4 Million Cooperative Agreement with US Department of Transportation to Continue its Center For Transportation Injury Research.
BUFFALO, NY OCTOBER 17, 2007:
CUBRC President and CEO, Tom McMahon, announced today the completion of negotiations and implementation of a four year cooperative agreement with the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration. The agreement totaling $4.4 million, will allow work to continue at CUBRC’s Center for Transportation Injury Research (CenTIR).
The CenTIR program has operated continuously since 1998 funded by grants obtained by Western New York’s Legislative Delegation cooperatively. This grant was included in the 2005 transportation reauthorization bill, known as “SAFETEA-LU” that provides for the allocation of Highway Trust Fund funding.
In making the announcement, Tom McMahon indicated, “This is a critical program for CUBRC and Western New York that builds on our heritage of transportation and public safety research. This agreement will permit the continued creation of high quality engineering and research careers impacting the Public’s safety here in Western New York. It also reflects the culmination of a bipartisan effort by our entire Western New York Congressional delegation led by Congressman Higgins who, as a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, provided critical support.”
Alan Blatt, the CUBRC Program Director further commented, “The continuation of this program is important because it assures the continuity of Western New York’s role in contributing to improved highway safety, and most importantly, reducing the number of crash-related injuries and deaths. In addition, the program will be able to continue its support of local student researchers working on advanced degrees at the University at Buffalo.
