CUBRC Awarded Year Two of Viral Drug Development

BUFFALO, NY SEPTEMBER 12, 2007:

CUBRC President and CEO, Tom McMahon, announced today that its Medical Biotechnology team, which previously competed successfully against many of the world’s most prominent bio-pharmaceutical companies, universities and research institutes for R&D funds to initiate an effort to create a new generation of anti-viral drugs, has now been awarded an additional $4.3 million to proceed to Phase II. The program funding now totals $8.3 million for the two year effort. “CUBRC’s clearance by the Department of Defense to proceed to Phase II of this program is an exciting and thoroughly deserved success for this team, based upon the terrific progress we have made this past year and the remarkable results achieved. Once again, this is a significant step in our efforts to expand our vibrant life sciences business in CUBRC and in the Buffalo-Niagara region” commented, Mr. McMahon. “The entire CUBRC team is working seamlessly to build success in this critical program.” Mr. McMahon further explained that CUBRC owes a debt of gratitude to, and additionally singled out for praise, Congressman Tom Reynolds. By securing the federal seed funding investment over the preceding four years, Congressman Reynolds greatly facilitated CUBRC’s development of the necessary in-house biological laboratory capabilities to compete successfully against the best in the world for this type of program.

The aims of CUBRC’s winning program are two-fold: 1) to develop a whole new class of broad-spectrum antiviral drugs and 2) to create a new and significantly quicker drug development path for antiviral therapeutics, with resulting benefits that will reach far beyond the confines of biodefense. Professor Christopher Davis, CUBRC’s Chief Scientist, CMO & Vice President for Medical Biotechnology, who is an internationally recognized leader in the biodefense arena with a background in drug research commented, “The confidence that the Department of Defense scientific collaborators and project managers have shown in us and what we have achieved in just one year has given a tremendous boost to the morale of our CUBRC team. Although our technical approach is radical, its validity is being proven out as each day’s results come in. We really are on the threshold of a new era as far as anti-viral therapy is concerned.”
