Maritime Domain Awareness « Back to Service

The maritime domain is defined as all areas and things of, on, under, relating to, adjacent to, or bordering on a sea, ocean, or other navigable waterway, including all maritime-related activities, infrastructure, people, cargo, and vessels and other conveyances. Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) is the collection, fusion and dissemination of enormous quantities of data — intelligence and information — drawn from U.S. joint forces, U.S. government agencies, international coalition partners and forces, and commercial entities.

A key challenge of Maritime Domain Awareness is in providing decision makers with an effective understanding of the maritime domain under the condition that vital information will not be geographically or organizationally centric. The CUBRC Center for Multisource Information Fusion is actively working to develop new technologies in the effective representation, abnormality detection, and intelligent exchange of heterogeneous, distributed information. These programs apply Web 2.0 technologies along with new developments in Information Fusion theory to monitor information sources across enterprise information backbones for Indications and Warnings of Conditions of Interest and communicate those detections to key stakeholders of that information.
