Atlas & Database of Air Medical Services (ADAMS)

ADAMS National Map ThumbnailIn alliance with the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS) and the air medical industry, and with support from FHWA, the CenTIR has established a national database containing all air medical helicopter and fixed wing services, including main and satellite base locations, rotor and fixed wing aircraft (make and model), communication centers and the major receiving hospitals for trauma and medical emergencies. This data resource, called the Atlas and Database of Air Medical Services (ADAMS), is implemented in a Geographic Information System (GIS) on the web (http://www.ADAMSairmed.org).

The need for such a web-based data resource is driven by newly-emerging, automatic crash notification (ACN) technologies (e.g., OnStar), which are changing both the content and the manner in which emergency messages from motor vehicle crashes are routed or accessed in real time.

ADAMS is formally updated each year and is now in its 7th edition.  Currently, there are 714 bases in the U.S. from which 867 air medical helicopters operate and 155 bases from which 309 air medical fixed wing aircraft operate.  ADAMS is used to support a variety of research projects, both at CUBRC and at other research institutions.  These projects have examined air medical coverage, trauma system access and flight safety issues.  ADAMS is also used to support homeland security and disaster response planning.  The 2009 ADAMS national map is shown above.
